We would like to keep our email mailing list up to date so we would appreciate it if you would include your email address (if used).
If you are paying your sub at the door, please have your details written out in advance.

A Brief History

The first members were probably friends or acquaintances of Col & Mrs Price, but membership grew quickly and at the end of the 1st year (1967-68), the membership was over 200. Our current membership floats around 320.

Joan Price was the first President; Helen Miller was President until her death in September 2022.

The Club started as The Wexford Flower Club & one of the first meetings was a Flower Arranging demonstration given by Helen’s mother - Mary Boardman.

Probably one of the reasons for continued success over the years is the standard & quality of speakers. These have included internationally known names such as Julia Clements, George Smith, Roy Lancaster, Thomas Packenham & Helen Dillon and those lesser known, but equally good, informative & entertaining. We are also lucky enough to have a lot of talent within our own membership.

Flower Shows are not so popular nowadays but they were ‘de rigour’ in the early days. One of the first was a Flower Festival to beat all Festivals!  All 16 churches in Wexford town were decorated in one fell swoop! Who nowadays would even know where these 16 churches are or were? We can think of the main churches of Rowe St, Bride St, St Iberius & The Friary – but would you think of the various Convent & College chapels and the churches in Anne St and Lower Rowe St.?

Our Millennium project was to "twin" with Comber Horticultural Society in Northern Ireland. We had met every two years, visiting various parts of Ireland until 2020 when our visit to Co Clare was cancelled due to Covid 19. These cross-border meetings resumed in 2023; 2026's tour and events will be planned by the Comber group.

Other Clubs possibly have occasional day trips to visit gardens; we do it on a grander scale! The first tours were for 3 or 4 days within Ireland – nowadays they include trips to England, Scotland, Wales & N Ireland and even Holland for most of a week.

We still do day trips and a very successful innovation is our ‘Members’ Garden Visits’ – we visit our own members' gardens, most not usually open to the public. It is a very sociable event and allows the garden owner to make a contribution to his or her favourite charity.

Our Logo

Our logo incorporates a sketch of Leucojum aestivum.   This simple and beautiful bulbous perennial is also commonly known as the Summer snowflake, Snowbell, Loddon lily or St George's violet.

Leucojum aestivum is listed in the Census Catalogue of the Flora of Ireland as being a native of County Wexford. It is widely cultivated throughout the island.

At the start of this century our Chairman at the time researched the native flora of the county and the committee chose the snowflake as suitable to adopt as a logo. The botanical artist Ros Power was commissioned to make a suitable drawing.

Journal

Our Journal is our current method of communication with members – published 3 times a year. As well as the vital information about our events it includes a variety of articles, letters and photos from our members and friends - some informative, some whimsical!

We celebrated our first 50 years in 2017.  Caoga Bliain ag Fás.
